Seán Ó Riada - Port na bPúcaí - CD
Seán Ó Riada, Ireland’s national composer, popularised Irish traditional music through his film scores and with his group Ceoltóirí Chualann.
On this newly-released album, Ó Riada weaves a magic spell with his own arrangements of great Irish airs played on piano and harpsichord.
The core of the album was recorded in May 1971, just five months before Ó Riada’s death at the early age of 40.
Other tracks were recorded in March 1971 and some date from 1966.
Tracks include the well-known ‘Carrigfergus’, ‘Carraig Donn’ and ‘Sliabh na mBan’.
A number of airs featured here were first introduced by Ó Riada to the public: ‘Aisling Gheal’, ‘Port na bPúcaí’ and ‘Cois an Ghaorthaigh’.
Ó Riada also plays airs from his childhood and a rousing sequence of patriotic tunes.
This hour-long CD is now being released for the very first time.
Exclusive Packaging & Extras: includes 12 page booklet with background notes and information on each track.
As a bonus on the CD, there is a story which Ó Riada told, not realising that the recording tape was still running
