Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin - Cry Of The Mountain | CD
Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin is now one of Ireland's best-known musicians and is Professor of Music at the University of Limerick where he founded the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance. This landmark recording showcases his pioneering spirit, bringing together music recorded by him for film and radio between 1974 and 1978. It includes colourful arrangements of four songs associated with Napoleon Bonaparte. His Concertina for Fiddle, ‘Seán Ó Duibhir an Ghleann’a, contrasts with film collages where Ó Súilleabháin brilliantly links Irish music with the exotic music of the Orient and South America.
From the early 1970s, in his endeavour to create new and exciting forms and sounds,
Ó Súilleabháin worked with traditional musicians from many parts of Ireland. The recordings on this album indicate his firm belief in the prime importance of solo tradition and feature a host of stellar musicians, including Paddy Keenan, Matt Molloy, Mary Bergin, Mel Mercier, Séamus Tansey and Paddy Glackin.
